Impaired drivers charged in Summerside over weekend

-

Summerside Police Services dealt with impaired drivers and issued two licence suspensions over the weekend.

Just after midnight Saturday, police received a complaint from a local bar that a drunk patron had just left in a vehicle.

Officers located the vehicle on North Market Street, and the driver was taken into custody.

The 35-year-old Charlottetown man provided breath samples above the legal limit.

The next incident took place around 3:30 a.m. Saturday when police received a call to the Willow Avenue area about a snowmobile being operated by an intoxicated man.

Police located the snowmobile in the area of Greenwood Drive. The operator attempted to pull away from police, but the machine got stuck.

Police took the 30-year-old Summerside resident into custody. He later provided breath samples that were twice the legal limit.

Just after 10:30 a.m. Saturday, a suspected impaired driver was reported leaving a Water Street business.

Police found the vehicle on Granville Street where a 59-year-old man was taken into custody after providing breath samples above the legal limit.

Sunday morning just before 1 a.m., police stopped a vehicle on Central Street for swerving over the centre line.

The driver showed signs of impairment and was given a roadside screening device test that resulted officers issuing a seven-day license suspension.

At 1:30 a.m. Sunday, police stopped another vehicle on Central Street, this time for failing to signal a turn.

The driver of this vehicle also had been drinking and was issued a seven-day license suspension after a roadside screening device test.

Sunday at 10:30 p.m., officers stopped a vehicle on Wyatt Crescent after it had swerved across the centre line and failed to signal a turn.

The driver of the vehicle, a 64-year-old Summerside man, showed signs of impairment by drug and was arrested at the scene.

He later refused an examination by a drug-recognition expert and is being charged with refusing a demand.

All of the accused drivers will appear in court at a later date to answer to impaired driving related charges.

The vehicles involved in each incident were also seized for a minimum of 30 days.
