The City of Charlottetown expressed its deepest condolences to the City of Humboldt, Sask., for the recent tragedy and death of players and personnel from the Humboldt Broncos team.

In a show of national mourning, Charlottetown’s flag was lowered to half-mast on Monday for the remainder of the week.

Prior to the start of Monday night’s council meeting, mayor and council observed a moment of silence for the community of Humboldt.

A book of condolences is also available for signing until Friday, April 13, at the reception desk of City Hall on Queen Street. The book will be mailed to the City of Humboldt at the end of the week.

“We cannot even imagine what the community, the families and the survivors are going through. Our hearts are with those grieving this insufferable loss,” said Mayor Clifford Lee. “We would like the City of Humboldt to know that they are in our thoughts and prayers.”

In addition to names in the book of condolences, many people left a brief message. Here is a sample of what people wrote:

“You are in our thoughts and prayers.’’

“Thinking of you in this time of sorrow.’’

“Prayers are with the entire community during this difficult time.’’

One person tried to reassure the people affected by this tragedy that they will get through it together.

“Wishing you strength for today and hope for tomorrow.’’

Another person left a longer message.

“Prayers and thoughts to the team, players, community, family and friends. Remember to reach out and support each other through this difficult time. God bless!’’
