Wings take opener

Western snags Game 1 of IJHL final

Silas Handrahan scored a pair and added a helper Tuesday to lead the Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings to a 4-0 win over the A&S Scrap Metal Metros in the opener of the Island Junior Hockey League final.

It took Handrahan and the Wings just 45 seconds to get the game-winner.

Assists on the play went to Abel Arsenault and Conner Morrissey.

The Red Wings took a 2-0 lead seven minutes later after Handrahan and Curklan Fraser set up Alex Morrissey.

Neither team hit the score sheet in the second as goalies Luke Oliver for Western and Alex Kelly for the Metros shut the door.

Western got back at it in the third when Handrahan picked up his second goal, and third point of the night, at 11:36 on assists from Dillon Wall and Morrissey to make it a 3-0 game.

The Red Wings sealed the deal with 5:52 remaining when the playoffs leading scorer, Jason Gallant, beat Kelly. Chasse Gallant and Wall assisted on the play.

Oliver made 27 saves earning the shutout.

Kelly stopped 39 of the 43 shots fired his way in the loss.

Neither Western nor the Metros scored on the power play, going 0-for-4 and 0-for-7, respective­ly.

The teams hit the ice for Game 2 on Thursday at Cody Banks Arena in Charlottet­own.

The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

The series moves back to Abram-Village on Friday for Game 3 at 7:30 p.m.

The Red Wings earned their ticket to the final by beating the Eastern Maniacs 4-1 in their first-round series, while the Metros upended the Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers four games to three in the other semifinal.

The No. 1 seeded Red Wings lead the league this season with 52 points, while the Metros finished second at 39.
