Top projects named at P.E.I. Science Fair and more than $15,000 in prizes presented

More than 210 young scientists from 27 Island school were awarded for their outstandin­g projects at the 2018 P.E.I. Science Fair ceremony held recently at the University of Prince Edward Island in the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre.

“Every year, I am amazed by the level of curiosity, creativity and courage demonstrat­ed by these young learners,” said Bill Whelan, the co-chairman of the f air.

In the spotlight were 152 science projects that were placed in front of 100 judges. Projects were also presented to other students and members of the public.

During the ceremony over $15,000 in prizes, provided by 47 community partners, were presented to young scientists.

Five students from Grades 7 to 12 were selected to represent the province at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa in May when more than $1 million in prizes and scholarshi­ps will be awarded. Those P.E.I. students were Sophie MacDonald, a Grade 10 student from Bluefield; Abby Chapman, Grade 9 from Birchwood Intermedia­te; Aiden Stewart, Grade 8 from Queen Charlotte Intermedia­te; Davis Nicholson and Joe Moak, Grade 7 students from Gulf Shore Consolidat­ed.
