P.E.I. couple gives newborn son extra name in honour of Humboldt Bronco player who died in April 6 crash

Kevin Broome and Brittany Ramsay had a name all picked out for their newborn son.

For the Tyne Valley couple, it was always going to be Bennett Charles.

Charles is a name that has been passed down through the family for generations, explained Broome.

“It just always goes to one of the boys, and this is my first son.”

On Friday, while they were playing the “waiting game” for their bouncing baby boy to arrive, Broome had to go pick up a few things for a memorial project he is working on in honour of the individuals who died in the Humboldt Broncos bus accident on April 6 in Saskatchewan.

Broome had just finished placing the Broncos logo and photos he had printed off for the monument and was labelling them when he got an idea.

He turned to his fiancée: “Why don’t we add Logan, after the young fella that donated his organs.”

Logan Boulet was one of 16 people who died after the crash. He had donated his organs to six others.

Ramsay thought the suggestion was an amazing idea and agreed to add the name.

Bennett Charles Logan Broome was born at 1:58 a.m. on April 14.

Reflecting back after hearing of the accident, Broome said that as a hockey player, a coach of two teams (the Alberton initiation team and the Atom A girls) and a parent, it’s hard to take in what happened to the Broncos and their families.

“You don’t hear of that happening around here. I can’t imagine what they would be feeling.”

Broome and Ramsay plan on telling Bennett when he is older about their decision to add Logan to his name and explain who he is named after.
