Charlottetown resident says conditions were great, courses tough at Whistler Cup

Macy Cudmore, a member of the P.E.I. Alpine Ski Team, recently returned from competing in one of the most important ski races in the world for young aspiring athletes.

Moving into its 26th year, the 2018 Whistler Cup in British Columbia attracted more than 400 competitors from 20 countries including the United States, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Australia and Japan.

Historically, the Whistler Cup competition has been the proving ground for such skiing greats as Lindsey Vonn, Mikaela Shiffrin and Canadian national team members Mike Janyk and Manny OsborneParadis to name a few.

“It was a great experience and fun to represent Atlantic Canada with other teammates from Newfoundland and New Brunswick,” said Cudmore, who was competing for the second time at the Whistler Cup. “The conditions were great and the courses were tough.”

The Charlottetown resident competed with the future stars of the sport in the super G, giant slalom, slalom and dual slalom disciplines during the past week. Super G was one of the longest and fastest courses Cudmore has ever raced. While dual slalom, a shorter and more technical course, saw her race side by side on an identical course against a top Canadian racer from Team Canada One.

Cudmore was one of the youngest competitors in the under-16 division, which included most racers training year-round.

She finished the super G in 1:19.92, which was 51st out of 76 racers. She had a combined time of 2:30.27 in the giant slalom to finish 43rd while her slalom time of 1:44.29 placed her 43rd.

Cudmore turned 15 at the event and the competitors and coaches sang happy birthday to her during the banquet.

Cudmore got her start ski racing at Brookfield provincial ski park and credits her coaches and other very competitive P.E.I. teammates for helping her progress in the sport.

“We all train hard, have fun, and push each other,” she said.
