Students recognized for excellence in trades, technology
Skills Canada P.E.I. recognized the achievements of 115 Island students at the recent Skills Excellence Awards night.
The evening, held at Holland College’s Tourism and Culinary Centre in Charlottetown, celebrated the success of competitors from the 2018 Provincial Skills Competitions.
Medals were presented to high school, post-secondary and apprentice students in 38 categories of competitions.
The annual provincial Skills competition brings together over 300 Island students to compete in a variety of trades and technology competitions ranging from mechatronics to video production.
Gold, silver and bronze medals were presented to top achievers in each competition area. The gold medal winner from each category will represent P.E.I. at the National Skills Competition in Edmonton in June.
Kathleen Casey, MLA for Charlottetown–Lewis Point, brought greetings from the province and thanked Skills Canada P.E.I. organizers for working with the students.
“I would like to congratulate all participants and wish best of luck to all gold medalists who will soon be participating in the national Skills Canada competition in Edmonton. We believe that supporting young islanders in learning skilled trades will fuel the prosperity of our whole province.”
Sue LeFort, president of Skills Canada P.E.I.’s board of directors, said the provincial competitions are the organizations flagship event.
“These competitions challenge students and apprentices to apply their training in trades and technology as they compete against their peers provincially, nationally and even internationally,” LeFort said. “This evening is a great opportunity to celebrate their achievements with their instructors, employers and family, as they prepare for the next level of competition.”
