Crime spree leads to jail

Kyle Clifford Palmer sentenced in provincial court in Charlottetown for shoplifting, breaching an undertaking and failing to attend court

A 33-year-old P.E.I. man who went on a crime spree shoplifting items ranging from a television to expensive meat to support his drug habit was sentenced to 390 days in jail in provincial court in Charlottetown.

Kyle Clifford Palmer appeared before chief judge Nancy Orr for sentencing Wednesday.

He previously pleaded guilty to seven thefts at Atlantic Superstore (Charlottetown and Montague), Canadian Tire, Sears and Toys “R” Us.

He stole a variety of items including pots and pans, cordless drills, razor blades and baby diapers.

Palmer was also facing charges for breaching an undertaking and failing to attend court.

He has been in custody since Feb. 17.

Crown attorney Jeff MacDonald said Palmer has had many opportunities to address his anger and addiction issues but struggles to participate and follow through with the various programs.

MacDonald said the only way to describe the nature of these thefts is a “crime spree”.

“It’s not an isolated grabbing of an item off a store shelf and running out while in the throes of an addiction,” said MacDonald. “This is a calculated effort over a period of time to grab high-end items from stores.”

Defence attorney Yolande Murphy said Palmer struggles with very serious addiction issues.

“Addiction issues this serious are not easy to overcome,” said Murphy.

Murphy says Palmer has potential and has had periods of doing well.

“It is obvious that the addictions are his primary issue and that he does need to get it under control or it will continue to control his life.”

Murphy said comments from his last employer were positive.

When he has his addiction under control, he is described as an excellent worker, reliable and a quick learner.

Palmer was sentenced to 390 days for the thefts and 18 months of probation.

He received 30 days in jail for failing to attend court and an additional 30 days in jail for breaching an undertaking. However, they are to be served concurrently with his other sentences.

He was credited for time and a half served since his remand on Feb. 17.

He must pay $800 to the victims of crime fund and more than $1,600 in restitution to the businesses.

Palmer must also write a letter of apology and stay away from Atlantic Superstore (Charlottetown and Montague), Canadian Tire and Toys “R” Us.
