Jack Ronahan wins triple crown at recent provincial championships
Jack Ronahan went 3-for-3 at the recent Badminton P.E.I. under-15 and under-19 provincials in Cornwall, taking the under-19 men’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles titles.
Ronahan capped a successful year with the singles title by beating David Pan 21-13 and 21-10 in the final.
Yihan Zhang won the consolation round.
In under-19 men’s doubles, Ronahan and Pan teamed to defeat Brandon Hastings and Brandon Gaudet 2-0 (21-8, 21-13), while Yonghao Yu and Michael Bernard won the consolation.
Ronahan’s third crown came with help from Ruiwen Zhu and the duo swept Aiden Pot and Hayden Ford 21-11 and 21-16 for the mixed doubles title. Yu and Brittney Foster took the consolation.
In under-19 women’s singles, Karla McCallum continued her success on the court by defeating Zhu 2-1 (16-21, 21-16, 21-19) in a back-and-forth final showing great skill and grit from both.
McCallum lost Game 1, but won two straight. Ford won the consolation round.
Meanwhile, the under-19 women’s doubles was a roundrobin event with four teams and Zhu and Cici Huo come out on top with a 3-0 record followed by Adelle Breau and Ford, Alexis Fougere and Torey MacDonald, and Brittney Foster and Ziqi Liu in second, third and fourth, respectively.
The tournament drew 37 participants.
