A 31-year-old P.E.I. man has been sentenced to six months in jail for convincing a 17-year-old girl to send him topless photos of herself.

Jeremy Daniel Stewart appeared before Justice Tracey Clements in Supreme Court of P.E.I. May 4 for sentencing.

Communication between Stewart and the victim began in December 2016.

They had a mutual friend on Facebook, and Stewart began messaging the victim to see if she wanted to do a photoshoot at a park for money.

He at one point offered her $2,100 to do a photoshoot if she wore a bikini or lingerie.

“I’ve asked for a review and to come back with a new policy,” he said

Souris-Elmira MLA Colin LaVie raised the issue during Friday’s question period, saying he heard from a farmer who received a letter in March that informed him he needed to be off land he was leasing by the end of May.

LaVie said the government has bulldozed forested land for highway projects but is now taking land from farmers to reforest.

“Robbing from Peter to pay Paul,” he said.

Brown said his department developed the policy as part of the government’s climate change action plan to re-forest 700 acres of land.

“We’re going to have to work

on a provincewide basis to come up with that 700 acres,” he said.

The department developed the policy before Brown took over the portfolio.

Brown said if there is land that can be found elsewhere to re-forest, then the government will go with that.

“It’s needed.”

He also said he would make sure the farmer LaVie referred to, and any others, would be

able to stay on the land until the policy review is completed.

“It’s important that we keep agricultural land in production, but if we can work with the agricultural community and identify properties that farmers are not using and not going to be using and we can re-forest them, I think that’s a better option.”
