Island trio drafted by USHL teams

DesRoches, Morrissey, Farrell chosen south of the border

Three Prince Edward Islanders were picked up in the United States Hockey League’s tier 1 draft on Monday and Tuesday.

Charlie DesRoches from Days Corner was drafted by Cedar Rapids in the third round, 37th overall of the phase one futures draft on Monday. The first phase is for players born in 2002.

The five-foot-10 DesRoches, who attended South Kent School in Connecticu­t, played right defence for Selects Academy 15s in the 2017-18 season, registerin­g 12 goals and 30 assists in 53 games. In the 201617 season with the Kensington Wild he picked up nine goals and 14 assists.

In phase two of the draft, held Tuesday, 17-year-old Brad Morrissey from Seacow Pond was picked up by Nebraska’s TriCity Storm in the fifth round, 68th overall. Morrissey is coming off a banner season with the Notre Dame Hounds of the Saskatchew­an Midget AAA Hockey League where he picked up 21 goals and 30 assists in 32 regular season games. His school team from Athol Murray College of Notre Dame went on to win the Telus Cup national championsh­ip and Morrissey, a right-winger, was named the tournament’s most sportsmanl­ike player. The 2017 Charlottet­own Islanders draft pick is finishing up his third school year at Notre Dame. He played with the Prince County Warriors in 2014-15.

Taken in the 17th round, 270th overall, was Dallas Farrell from Stratford. Farrell, a fivefoot-11 centre who turns 19 later this month, has played the last two seasons with the Boston Junior Bruins and for three seasons before that he played for Notre Dame teams. He played the 2012-13 season with the Kings County Bantams.
