Sentencing set aside to June in resisting arrest case

-

A Charlottetown man with a lengthy criminal record resisted arrest after threatening his mother.

Court heard Wednesday that Terrance James Barrett, 34, of Charlottetown made comments to his mother on Feb. 5 that left her feeling intimidated.

He was heavily intoxicated by drugs and/or alcohol. He became aggressive when police were arresting him, yelling, spitting and uttering profanities at the police.

Several officers were required to get Barrett under control and placed in the back of a police vehicle.

Addictions, court was told, are the biggest issues facing Barrett, who is currently under methadone treatment.

A probation officer noted Barrett “appears to be keeping things together’’ and is doing the best that he has in a while.

Barrett, however, has had a “couple of

slips’’, according to his own lawyer.

Barrett stood in court to apologize for his actions.

He said his landscaping business is “up and running.’’

Douglas said the man’s 33-page criminal record, which includes 16 thefts and being unlawfully at large, will be an aggravating factor in sentencing.

Douglas will wait until June 20 to impose his sentence at which time the judge will try to determine how Barrett is doing with his landscaping business.
