Cleaning Montague together
Town taking part in Canadawide cleanup effort
“Let’s all get out there and show we love this town.” Coun. Wayne Spin
A Montague councillor is challenging his colleagues to lead by example during a cleanup effort in the community this weekend.
The town will be participating in the Clean Canada Together initiative from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, with council voting during its last meeting to host a barbecue with hot dogs and prizes following the event.
Coun. Wayne Spin, who made the request for the barbecue as a way to show appreciation to volunteers, also asked other members of council to lead by example and take part.
“Let’s all get out there and show we love this town,” said Spin, who described the event as a chance to build community spirit.
The initiative is a partnership
with Glad, which donates the bags. Those bags can now be picked up at Montague Town Hall and left on the roadside for town staff to pick up following the cleanup.
The barbecue will be held at the town’s maintenance building.
The Clean Canada Together program, which encourages participants to use the hashtag #Clean Canada Together, saw involvement from more than 10 communities and regions across the country last year including Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg and Edmonton.
Montague CAO Andy Daggett made the original pitch for the
town to get involved after meeting one of the initiative’s founders this past winter.
The town also wanted to hold
the event on the same day as the Women’s Institute’s annual roadside cleanup as a way to support the long-standing
endeavour, which is now in its 45th year.
