Gramma’s spring kids’ safety rant

-

It is not hard to tell that spring is in the air. Vehicles are speeding up, tires are squealing, side streets and subdivisions are drag strips. As a grandmother of two beautiful little girls, I am pleading with everyone who operates a motor vehicle to be mindful of their driving. With the warmer weather, the children are out playing in the front yards, ditches, and exploring their neighbourhoods.

The children are not aware of how fast your vehicle goes, that it can injure or God forbid, kill them, or how long it will take you to stop. They may even play hide and seek underneath your vehicle when it has been parked. Have a look around and under your vehicle before you pull away.

Keep our neighbourhoods safe by driving slow. You never know when a child may dart up from one of the ditches in a subdivision, or from between two parked cars on the streets.

I cannot imagine how it would feel to injure or kill someone because I was driving inappropriately. You could lose control when you are squealing your tires or driving in excess of the speed limit. You may think you are being cool, but what happens if a child darts out in front of you when you are being reckless? How would you would explain yourself to the parent of the child you hit?

If you are worried about certain vehicles that fall into driving inappropriately, notify the police. Driving is a privilege.
