A huge shout out to Mr. MacDonald’s carpentry class for designing and building 30 benches that honour the memory of lives lost to mental illness. The benches were placed in the gardens of Lennon House in Rustico. Members of the class were interviewed by CBC radio. They did an excellent job in sharing the meaning of the project and the experience they had.

Applications for the Bluefield High School Grade 12 special awards are now available in student services.

The Atlantic Presenters Association (APA) and the Association of Rural Community Halls (ARCH) have selected five emerging P.E.I. artists to each open a date of the upcoming Rural Routes Tour featuring ECMA-winning country artist Ryan Cook.

They are Olivia Blacquiere, North Rustico; Nolan Compton, Morell; Jenna-Marie Gallant, Rustico; Lawrence Maxwell, Charlottetown; and Kenzie Whalen, Stratford.

“Congratulations to these talented musicians who will be taking part in these special performances,” says APA executive director Laurie Gillis of the musical tour that kicks off on May 16 at Tracadie Community Centre.

She’s looking forward to the travelling music festival.

“The Rural Routes Tour is about sharing a fun and entertaining experience with lesserserved communities across P.E.I. and we’re thrilled to pair an amazing, award-winning artist like Ryan Cook with some of

the Island’s best new voices for these special shows.”

The feeling is mutual, says Blacquiere, who will be the featured act at the New London Community Complex on May 19.

“I’m honoured to have been given this opportunity. I grew up listening to, loving and learning classic country and folk songs.”

Cook is embarking on the Rural Routes Tour following the launch of his heralded new album, “Having a Great Time”.

Mixing classic country music with modern satire, he has forged a sound between contemporary folk and dyed-in-the wool country. Cook has shared stages with the likes of Dwight Yoakam, Rosanne Cash and Travis Tritt; compiling an impressive list of honours, including three awards for album of the year from Music Nova Scotia.

“I’m really looking forward to performing on Prince Edward Island again, that’s for sure,” says Cook. “Many of my favourite performers from all of Atlantic Canada come from the Island, so it’ll be a treat sharing the stage with these talented young musicians and hearing what’s in store from the next generation of Island artists.”
