Shorthande­d Islanders manage split

P.E.I. manages a win Sunday against Saint John after dropping a pair to Metro

The P.E.I. Islanders managed a split Sunday in Charlottet­own with the Saint John Alpines despite playing shorthande­d with only 11 players in New Brunswick Junior Baseball League action.

The Islanders took the first game 8-4 with five runs in the seventh inning, keyed by a Josh Myers’ three-run double.

Brett Hicken got win with a seventh-inning save from Chandler LaPorte. All nine P.E.I. players had a hit. Myers had a pair.

Matt Oram was the losing pitcher. Tom Gogan had two hits for Saint John.

Game 2 Saint John starter Ryan Nason and three relievers held P.E.I. to five hits in a 6-3 win.

Connor Jones got the loss with relief from Nolan Hicken and Jayden MacLean. Ryne Macisaac had two hits for P.E.I. with Chandler Laporte, Jed Noonan, and Elijah Hood each with one. P.E.I.’s record is 3-3 following the weekend games.

Saturday

On Saturday, the Metro Mudcats swept a doublehead­er with the P.E.I. Islanders, winning 15-10 and 7-2.

In the first game, Declan Buckle and Nick LeBlanc each had three RBIs to lead Metro.

LeBlanc also led the Metro attack with three base hits along with Philip Rail, who also had three hits in the game.

For the Islanders, Jed Noonan went 3-for-5 on the day. Elijah Hood had two RBIs for the local team.

Johnathan Arsenault (2), John Savidant (2), Hood, Connor Jones, John Myers, Chase Gallant and Connor McGregor also had hits for the Islanders.

Buckle started for Metro, keeping the Islanders off the scoresheet for the first two innings before giving way to Blake Finn. Finn allowed four earned runs in one inning before he was replaced by Rail. Despite giving up six earned runs in four innings, he picked up the win.

Chandler LaPorte started for the Islanders, giving up one run in two innings. He was replaced by Jayden MacLean who went an inning and a third, giving up just one run. Savidant then came on and went an inning, giving up five runs before he was replaced by Porter Smith (1-1) who took the loss, surrenderi­ng eight runs in two and one-third innings.

In the second game, Blake Flinn, Buckle, Ben Carson, Julien Galloway and Colin Robichaud each drove in a run as the Mudcats took the game 7-2.

Carson was 2-for-3 at the plate while Galloway was 2-for4.

For the Islanders, McGregor and Myers were both 1-for-2 at the dish.

On the mound, Ian Connors (1-0) went six innings for Metro, giving up two runs on three hits before Colin Robichaud came on to pitch the last inning. He retired all six batters he faced.

For the Islanders, Johnathan Arsenault (0-1) went four innings, giving up five runs (one earned) in four innings before he was lifted for Nolan Hicken who gave up two runs on two innings.
