Seniors Active Living Centre celebrates 25th anniversary in 2018

Scott MacDonald says “social camaraderie’’ is at the heart of the Seniors Active Living Centre (SALC) in Charlottetown.

Some members come into the centre three to four times a week to enjoy good cheer with fellow seniors.

Celebrating 25 years, the SALC has a healthy membership of 297, but it always has the goal of adding new members, notes MacDonald, the centre’s president.

Members must be at least 50 years old, but eight are at least 90 while one, Bruce Coulson, turned 99 on Friday.

“There is something here all the time.’’ Scott MacDonald

The Seniors Active Living Centre’s first home was in the Oak Tree Place Mall off University Avenue in Charlottetown, but it has been located in its current spacious location in the Bell Aliant Centre on the UPEI campus since 2004.

Activities at the centre, which is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., are varied and plentiful.

Cards are regularly brought out for friendly games of auction, bridge, cribbage and euchre.

There is bingo, scrabble and puzzles.

Social events range movies to potlucks.

Members can also receive useful information from a host from of speakers on everything from health to gardening.

In addition, they can take painting classes, they can shoot a game or two of pool or they can enjoy a discount swim at the Capital Area Recreation Inc. (CARI) pool.

“There is something here all the time,’’ says MacDonald.

To mark the milestone anniversary, the SALC will be holding several events, including an open house on Thursday, June 14, a free swim and a ceilidh.

Annual membership is $25, but it’s complimentary for anyone age 90 or older.
