P.E.I. students win national medals
Five Islanders take part in Canada Wide Science Fair
Three Island students have earned medals at this year’s Canada Wide Science Fair.
They were among five Island students (Davis Nicholson, Abby Chapman, Aiden Stewart, Sophie MacDonald and Joe Moak) who participated at the May 12-18 event at Carleton University in Ottawa.
“We can all be proud of the achievements of these five remarkable students,” said Bill Whelan, co-chairman of the P.E.I. science fair.
“Science fairs provide an opportunity for students to express their ideas, creativity and talents, and to share this with their communities.”
Sophie, a Grade 10 student at Bluefield Senior High, received a silver medal in the intermediate division with her project
entitled “Drug Discovery from Actinobacteria Using a Temperature/Culture Mimic Approach.”
Joe and Davis, Grade 7
students at Gulf Shore Consolidated School, received silver medals in the junior division for “A Picture is Worth a Million Words.”
All three also received $2,000 entrance scholarships to Western University.
The Canada Wide Science Fair is run through Youth Science Canada,
Canada’s leading organization for engaging and celebrating excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among Canada’s youth.
