P.E.I. students win national medals

Five Islanders take part in Canada Wide Science Fair

Three Island students have earned medals at this year’s Canada Wide Science Fair.

They were among five Island students (Davis Nicholson, Abby Chapman, Aiden Stewart, Sophie MacDonald and Joe Moak) who participat­ed at the May 12-18 event at Carleton University in Ottawa.

“We can all be proud of the achievemen­ts of these five remarkable students,” said Bill Whelan, co-chairman of the P.E.I. science fair.

“Science fairs provide an opportunit­y for students to express their ideas, creativity and talents, and to share this with their communitie­s.”

Sophie, a Grade 10 student at Bluefield Senior High, received a silver medal in the intermedia­te division with her project

entitled “Drug Discovery from Actinobact­eria Using a Temperatur­e/Culture Mimic Approach.”

Joe and Davis, Grade 7

students at Gulf Shore Consolidat­ed School, received silver medals in the junior division for “A Picture is Worth a Million Words.”

All three also received $2,000 entrance scholarshi­ps to Western University.

The Canada Wide Science Fair is run through Youth Science Canada,

Canada’s leading organizati­on for engaging and celebratin­g excellence in science, technology, engineerin­g and mathematic­s (STEM) among Canada’s youth.
