New trustee for Health P.E.I.

-

Health P.E.I. has appointed Jim Revell as temporary trustee after the entire board resigned in late May.

A former Health P.E.I. board member, Revell is a member of the P.E.I. Law Society and Canadian Bar Association. He is currently the chief executive officer of the Insurance Company of Prince Edward Island.

“I am delighted that Mr. Jim Revell, a former Health P.E.I. board member and community leader, has accepted the invitation to be trustee for the health authority,” said Health and Wellness Minister Robert Mitchell. “His expertise, along with his experience, will be of great benefit to the health-care system.”

The trustee is intended to be a temporary position until a new board can be established. Former Health P.E.I. chairman Alex MacBeath and the entire board handed in a notice of resignation May 22 after changes were announced to the Health Services Act that gave more power to the health minister.

MacBeath told The Guardian at the time that he had concerns with the new model. He said board proposals were already getting overturned by the health minister, including the recommendation of a CEO and the development of a business plan with measurable targets to achieve fiscal balance.

Revell says he has great confidence in the health system “and its many outstanding employees.”

“I see my job as ensuring stability within our health system as we continue to work towards providing safe, quality health care for all Islanders,” Revell said. “Health P.E.I. is committed to working in partnership with all Islanders and sustaining a system that will meet their health-care needs.”

Mitchell says the plan is to return to a model involving a health board.

“There is great value in a board of directors for Health P.E.I., and we are now accepting applications for anyone interested in putting their name forward for consideration,” Mitchell said. “The Health P.E.I. board of directors has an important role in accountability within our health system. Board members create linkages to the community and oversees the day-to-day operation of our health-care system.”

Revell previously served on the executive and audit committee of the Health P.E.I. board. In addition, his late father, John Joseph Revell, was the last chairman of the Charlottetown Hospital board and was vice-chairman of the founding board of directors of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
