Parcel purchase

- BY MITCH MACDONALD

A transfer of one parcel of land is necessary in order to allow for the sale of the former interpretive centre building in Georgetown, says the town’s mayor.

Mayor Lewis Lavandier said the town is preparing to transfer a parcel of land located next to the building, which was also previously the site of Clam Diggers restaurant, for $1 to Terry Nabuurs.

Nabuurs is in the process of opening a restaurant in the building and is planning on purchasing it from the Georgetown Area Development Corporation (GADC). However, Lavandier said, in order to complete the sale of the building, the town must transfer the adjacent parcel of land.

While the GADC owns the building, the town had owned part of the property and didn’t anticipate that the building would be sold.

“Now that (the building) is going to be sold (the buyer) has to have rights to the property,” said Lavandier. “And we have to go through the proper channels.”

Because the land is being transferred for under market value, a public meeting for input was necessary and was held Monday in the town’s council chambers.

Lavandier said the small piece of property would not be of much use to anyone other than the building’s owner.

“It’s only a partial lot and it wouldn’t be any good for anybody else,” said Lavandier.

The transfer would see all legal costs and other accompanying fees borne by the GADC.

Lavandier said the town was thrilled with Nabuurs’ plans.
