-

There will be Prince Edward Island representation at a major and demanding international sporting event.

Kim Landry of Charlottetown and Dan McCarthy of Summerside will be among 3,200 athletes from 40 countries competing in the International Triathlon Union (ITU) world multisport championships in early July in Odense, Denmark.

Landry and McCarthy will be representing Team Canada in the sprint duathlon competition, which consists of a five-kilometre run, 20-kilometre bike leg and a 2.5-kilometre run.

“We are both experienced runners and cyclists, and we are very excited about the opportunity to represent Canada at a world event,” said Landry. “We are most appreciative of the efforts of the Dan McCarthy of Summerside and Kim Landry of Charlottetown.

volunteers on P.E.I., who organize local events, giving (Island athletes) the opportunity to continue to compete.”

The two Island athletes are no strangers to this competition, competing in last year’s world championships in Penticton, B.C.

“With our experience last year, we know more of what to expect this time around,” said McCarthy. “While the cycling in Penticton was in mountainous terrain, the course in Odense, Denmark, is much flatter, so faster times are expected and we are looking forward to it.”

Landry finished 13th overall in the strong women’s 35-39 age group, and she was the top Canadian cyclist in her age group.

During the past year, Landry has focused her training on running more than cycling. She has run a half marathon and a full marathon in Florida, qualifying for the Boston Marathon.

McCarthy was the top Canadian runner in the 65-69 age group and finished seventh overall in Penticton. This year, his training has focused more on cycling.

While training during the past year, Landry and McCarthy have participated in duathlons organized by Triathlon P.E.I., and local road races organized by P.E.I. Roadrunners. Landry and McCarthy were recognized by Triathlon P.E.I. as the 2017 female and male duathletes. TORONTO - The Toronto Maple Leafs have added depth to their forward ranks with the addition of Tyler Ennis.

The 28-year-old Edmonton native has signed a one-year, US$650,000 deal with the club.
