A P.E.I. man who stole a hammer and sold stolen kettle bell weights through an online ad was fined $300 Thursday.

Aaron Matthew Wilson, 39, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Georgetown where he pleaded guilty to the theft and possessing stolen property.

Crown attorney Nathan Beck told the court the Home Hardware in Montague reported the theft of a hammer and that Wilson was caught on video taking it.

Beck said two days later the Town and County Aquatic Plus (TCAP) facility in Montague reported someone stole eight kettle bell weights.

After investigating, the police found Wilson posted an ad for them on Kijiji and sold the weights for $90.

Wilson admitted to stealing the weights and told police he was glad he got caught.

In court, Wilson said he made an error in judgment and wanted to make it right.

“This is not who I am,” he said.

Orr fined Wilson $300 for stealing the hammer and gave him a suspended sentence for possession of stolen property related to the kettle bell weights.

Wilson will be on probation for one year.

He must pay $190 in victim surcharges along with restitution to the Home Hardware and the woman who bought the weights.

Wilson is banned from the Home Hardware during his probation and must write apology letters to the victims.
