Country take-over at Harbourfront Theatre
Country music is taking centre stage at Harbourfront Theatre this summer.
“No matter your country music preferences, we have something for you,” says Kieran Keller, Harbourfront Theatre’s executive director. “New country, classic country — we’ve got it all.”
Having already welcomed the Toronto band, Union Duke, Nashville comes to town on Sunday, July 29, when Grammy awardwinning country star Suzy Bogguss makes her first appearance at Harbourfront. A prominent Top 40 artist in the era of ‘90s country, Bogguss rose to fame with hits like “Hey Cinderella,” “Drive South” and “Oubound Plane,” earning her a well-deserved place among the country royalty of the time like Garth Brooks, Reba MacEntyre, Patty Loveless and more.
Awarded the Academy of Country Music’s Top New Female Vocalist honour in 1989, Bogguss went on to receive a series of nominations and awards not only from the academy but also from the Country Music Association, CMT, ASCAP and the Grammys.
“Having Suzy come to our theatre is a huge deal to us,” says Keller. “She has countless accolades to her name and each one is so well deserved — she’s flawless.”
For fans of classic country, Ryan Cook as Hank Williams is a must-see, says Keller. Playing Friday, Aug. 3, 7:30 p.m., this act features performance sees Cook and his band, the Drifting Cowboys, perform 22 songs, including country standards like “Hey Good Lookin’,” “Jambalaya” and “Your Cheatin’ Heart” in tribute to the music legend who many consider to be the greatest country singer/ songwriter of all time, Hank Williams.
