Jillian Clow to perform today in Charlottetown
The next concert in a summer recital series is set for the Kirk of St. James today at 12:10 p.m.
Jillian Clow, mezzo-soprano, is joined by her mother, soprano Juliana Elsinga, in two duets. Her mother also has a solo number, and Clow rounds out the program with vocal music from various sources. Her recital features songs and arias from composers such as Barber, Rossini and De Falla.
They will be assisted by Frances McBurnie on piano, who is the director of music at the church and is well-known for her collaborative work.
The recital is at 35 Fitzroy St., Charlottetown. Admission is by donation to the Kirk’s Choral Scholarships, a program in which four singers from UPEI join the Kirk’s Senior Choir for the academic year and receive a scholarship while they do so. This program is beneficial to both the students and the church.
Originally from Prince Edward Island, Clow received her bachelor of music from UPEI under the guidance of Sung Ha Shin Bouey and recently graduated from UBC this spring with her master of music in opera. She will be continuing with UBC Opera for another year as she pursues a diploma in music performance studies.
Clow began performing with the UBC Opera Ensemble in 2016 under the guidance of Rhoslyn Jones. Since she joined on with UBC opera, she has appeared as Vera Boronel in Menotti’s “The Consul”, Dryade in Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos”, Tisbe in Rossini’s “La Cenerentola”, Ramiro in Mozart’s “Die Gärtnerin aus Liebe” and Zita in Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi”.
She performed as a mezzo soloist in the VSO Traditional Christmas concert series and as Fisherwoman in the VSO’s performance of Peter Grimes in concert.
