Roundabout project still waiting for funding

- BY DAVE STEWART

Work should begin on the St. Peters Road roundabout in Sherwood sometime by mid to late 2019, says the chairman of Charlottetown’s public works committee.

Coun. Terry Bernard said while many residents may have thought things would have been moving by now the money simply hasn’t been there for the project at the corner, where Vogue Optical and Leon’s is now located.

This project will require not only municipal dollars but also matching contributions from the provincial and federal governments.

Bernard said the next application process for the new federal government Building Canada Fund projects, which will emphasize road projects, should begin by next March.

“We’re basically ready to go and so what the plan was to go in and do all the earth work as far as pipes and replacing water lines, replacing sewer lines and so on,’’ Bernard said.

“Once that earth work is done then we would go about finishing the roundabout.’’

The councillor said he fully expects the roundabout, which takes in traffic from Belvedere Avenue, Brackley Point Road and St. Peters Road, will be approved in the next round of federal funding.

The already busy intersection is about to get a bit more congested as D.P. Murphy has plans to build a new Wendy’s restaurant next to Leon’s Furniture, on the site of the now defunct International Restaurant.
