Atlantic Sires Stakes two and three-year-old trotters will be featured on tonight’s card.
The top three-year-old pacing colts in Atlantic Canada converged on Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park on Monday afternoon of Old Home Week and Sock It Away demolished his competition.
In the final $12,800 Atlantic Sires Stakes A-division of the afternoon for sophomore pacing colts, Sock It Away controlled every fraction for driver Marc Campbell to pull away by over two-lengths in 1:54.
The mile was second fastest ever recorded by a three-year-old pacing gelding at the CDP, as PH Jackpot holds the overall record of 1:52.4. Sock It Away laid down splits of 26.4, 56 and 1:25.3 while being unchallenged by his foes. Woodmere Ideal Art (driven by Jason Hughes) was second while Tobins Lightning (Kenny Arsenault) was third. Kevin MacLean trains sock It Away for owner Reg MacPherson of Stratford.
Flash In The Pang and driver David Dowling claimed the other $12,800 division in 1:55.4 for trainer Pat Murphy and owner Hughie Murphy of Borden-Carleton.
The race saw interference in the stretch drive as race favourite Half Cut (Mark Bradley) had his tire flattened by Rockin Party (Danny Romo). Rockin Part finished second but was placed sixth for interfering with three horses. The placing moved Howmac Diamond (Paul Langille) up to second and Dustylanesam (Austin Sorrie) third.
Old Home Week racing continues today with a 7 p.m. post time featuring the Atlantic Sires Stakes two- and three-year-old trotters. A pair of $8,640 Atlantic Sires Stakes – Meridian Farms two-year-old trot divisions are in Races 2 and 6.
The three-year-old trotters have a trio of $6,420 divisions in Race 4, 8 and 10. Buckaroo headlines the 12-dash program in Race 8 fresh off a 1:59.4 track record over Northside Downs in North Sydney, N.S., in Atlantic Sires Stakes action. Marc Campbell will drive the Bo Ford trainee from Post 5 for owners Larry and Kathy Chappell of Marshfield.
The three-year-old trotting track record at the CDP is held by Waiting On A Woman in 1:58.4.
The card also features the second leg of the Alpine $5,000 claiming series as well as a $1,950 Open Trot in Race 5 named the Bob “Bomber” Bevins Memorial.
