Woman killed while riding bicycle in Kildare Capes

A 60-year-old Alberton woman was killed Monday evening after being struck by a vehicle while riding her bicycle along Route 12 in Kildare Capes.

The car that struck the woman left the scene. Police say they located the driver, a 31-year-old man from Kildare Capes, a few hours later with the assistance of the RCMP’s police dog team.

The crash was reported to police at 6:51 p.m.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Derrick Hewitt, commander of Prince District RCMP, says police have talked to one ey witness, but they are still looking to speak to anyone who might have been in the area at the time of the collision.

Officers went door-to-door in the Kildare Capes area Tuesday morning.

Hewitt said the individual arrested will be appearing before a justice of the peace to determine whether he would be released from custody or remanded until his next court appearance.

Hewitt said they expect to lay charges related to leaving the scene of a collision or failing to provide assistance.

Hewitt said the vehicle and the bicycle were travelling south along Route 12, towards Alberton, when the fatality occurred.

He said the deceased was a P.E.I. resident from the local area.

Further informatio­n about the individual arrested was being withheld until after charges are laid.
