P.E.I. Supreme Court vacancy filled
The federal Justice minister has filled the P.E.I. Supreme Court judiciary vacancy left by Justice Gordon Campbell.
Jody Wilson-Raybould announced Friday that Gregory A. Cann, a partner at Cox & Palmer, has been appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island.
Campbell elected to become a supernumerary judge effective Jan. 1. Cann was born in Shawinigan, Que., and raised in Shawinigan, Montreal and Wolfville, N.S.
He completed an undergraduate degree at Acadia University and graduated from Dalhousie Law School. He articled with the Halifax office of the Department of Justice Canada.
Following admission to the Nova Scotia Bar in 1989, he worked as a prosecutor in Halifax. In 1990, he relocated to Prince Edward Island and was admitted to the P.E.I. Bar in 1991.
He joined Cox & Palmer that same year, where he maintained a civil litigation practice until being appointed to the judiciary. He received his Queen’s Counsel designation in 2007.
Cann says he believes strongly in the importance of mental health and has been an advocate for those struggling with mental illness. He has volunteered with the board of directors of Fitzroy Centre and as the President of the P.E.I. branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association.
He lives in Charlottetown with his wife, Nancy Birt, Q.C., and their three children.
