Smoak goes deep as Jays beat Indians

The UPEI Panthers are coming home with two hard-earned points from the opening weekend of play in the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) men’s soccer conference.

The Panthers played two scoreless games against the Memorial Sea-Hawks in St. John’s, N.L.

Brett Strba made four saves in each of Saturday’s and Sunday’s draws.

“I was pleased with the performanc­e of the team and considerin­g it’s the first game of our season we will take the point today,” UPEI head coach Lewis Page said Saturday.

Midfielder Andrea Mahoney, a third-year Panther from Sydney, N.S., scored in the 38th minute of Saturday’s contest. Jennifer Bent replied for the Sea-Hawks in the 56th minute.

Muise made five saves for the Panthers while Walsh stopped four shots for the home side.

The Mounties (0-2-0) come to Charlottet­own Friday for a 5 p.m. game before the Capers (20-0) are here Sunday for a 1 p.m. start.

Justin Smoak hit his team-leading 24th home run of the season as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Cleveland Indians 6-2 on Sunday.

Teoscar Hernandez also had a homer for the Blue Jays (6578). Hernandez came out of the dugout in the fourth inning after Randal Grichuk left the game due to injury. Grichuk left the game when he collided with a security guard while trying to field a foul ball. Grichuk went face first into the guard’s stool and appeared to injure his nose.
