Evening of food and lecture on Sept. 13

Acadian Harvest Festival features Robert Pendergast and Georges Arsenault

-

As part of the Acadian Harvest Festival at The Farmers’ Bank of Rustico and Doucet House Museums, an evening of food with chef Robert Pendergast, as well as a lecture presented by historian and folklorist Georges Arsenault, is planned for Thursday, Sept. 13.

From 5 to 7:15 p.m., Pendergast will prepare traditional Acadian food at the outdoor clay bake oven and will entertain with stories and music while he bakes. Pre-registration is requested. This event will be happening rain or shine.

Arsenault’s presentation, given in English, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Arsenault will talk about the traditions related to the meals served at Acadian weddings in the Maritime provinces and the Magdalen Islands.

Until the 1960s, as many as three meals could be served at a wedding. The talk will be illustrated with numerous photos, including a picture of a 100-yearold wedding cake that has been preserved by the University of Moncton Acadian Museum.

Born in Abram-Village, Arsenault now lives in Charlottetown. He holds a masters degree in folklore studies from Université Laval and is the author of numerous books that celebrate the history and culture of P.E.I.

The museums are located at 2188 Church Rd., Route 243 off Route 6, in Rustico. The Farmers’ Bank of Rustico Museum is wheelchair accessible and airconditioned. More information about the events and prices (cash only) can be found at 902-9633168, farmers@pei.aibn.com or www.farmersbank.ca.
