The funeral for Dr. Norma Jean Murphy was held on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at St. Dunstan’s Basilica where the funeral was celebrated by Reverend Martin Carter who also delivered the homily. The funeral pall was placed on the casket by Gerard Murphy and Sharon Mullally and pallbearer­s Clifford Murphy, Gerard Murphy, Ronnie Murphy, Emmett Murphy, Clark Murphy, and Christophe­r Howard led the funeral procession. The first readings were delivered by Clifford Murphy and Gloria McInnis-Perry and the prayers of the faithful by Leigh Ellen Walsh. The funeral mass was sung by St. Dunstan’s Parish Choir under the direction of organist Leo Marchildon, featuring the songs Here I Am Lord, Prayer of St. Francis, Dona Nobis Pacem, and Oh Loving God. Ave Maria was offered as a meditation solo by Flora Ann Whitty. The internment took place in the Roman Catholic Cemetery. Following the funeral mass, friends and family gathered at the Haviland Club for a reception, which featured entertainm­ent by the Atlantic String Machine and a meal catered by Chef John Pritchard at Pure Kitchen Catering. The reception was hosted by Stephen Walsh, who shared fond memories and invited others to do the same. Remarks were given by friends Joan Walsh, Gloria McInnis-Perry and Doug Kirkaldy, by Pauline Murphy on behalf of the family, by Dr. Gail Tomlyn Murphy on behalf of Dalhousie University, and by Myrtle Jenkins-Smith on behalf of UPEI. Two favoured songs – “The Rose” by Bette Midler and “You Shall Never Walk Alone” from the musical Carousel – were performed by Melissa MacKenzie and Leo Marchildon. Floral arrangemen­ts were provided by Flower Buds for both the mass and reception. Also on prominent display were the graduation gowns that arrived from the University of South Australia just in time to celebrate the life of Dr. Norma Jean Murphy. May she rest in peace.
