Cool Moon Festival continues this month
From the ‘Objects of the Mind’ exhibition, currently on view to the Invitational Gala, there’s lots to take in at the Cool Moon Festival
The main stage of Confederation Centre of the Arts will come alive with a dazzling array of world class music, dance, incredible performance art and visual art from around the globe.
It’s all part of the Cool Moon Festival, which kicked off Sept. 15 with “Objects of the Mind” at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery (CCAG). These are brush and ink paintings by Chinese artist Dianyu Zhao, who specializes in painting nature, particularly flowers and birds.
He is known as a student of Qi’s Lineage under the son of Baishi Qi, who is one of the two most famous painters in modern Chinese art history.
This exhibition, presented in the Fred S. and Ogden Martin Concourse Gallery, is collaboration between the Great Enlightenment Buddhist Institute Society (GEBIS) and the CCAG.
Together with local household names, internationally recognized artists will perform in this new festival dedicated to human connections and cultural dialogue.
Pop-up entertainment featuring local and visiting artists will be happening through the last week of September across the province preceding two shows in Charlottetown at the Confederation Centre of the Arts.
On Saturday, Sept. 29, 7 p.m. the curtain will rise on the Homburg stage for the Cool Moon Invitational Gala.
This cultural arts exchange will feature over 40 artists performing music, dance, and Chinese opera’s face-changing magic, an accredited UNESCO intangible heritage.
There will be a special guest performance by Karine Ste-Marie whose songs will include her recent hit “Charlottetown” sung in both French and English.
The grand festival highlight is a Sunday, Sept. 30 matinee with a world-class drama, “Shangri-La”, an infusion of western modern dance with Tibetan traditional dancing by the award-winning Wanma Jiancuo Dance Company from Beijing.
Special guest Lennie Gallant will open the show with several songs off his new “Time Travel” album plus a memorable return to Searching for Abegweit featuring indigenous dancers.
The festival will conclude with a Faith inSight photography exhibition held at GEBIS Charlottetown at 133 Queen St. 2nd Floor commencing Oct. 4. Cool Moon Festival is presented by GEBIS and co-organized by GWBI (Great Wisdom Buddhist Institute).
