Jarmyn P.E.I.’s new police commission­er

Twenty-two finalists have been named for this year’s Greater Charlottet­own Area Chamber of Commerce President’s Excellence Awards, which will be held Nov. 14.

More than 70 organizati­ons were nominated for the 13th annual awards. An independen­t panel of six judges adjudicate­d the submission­s and selected three finalists in each category.

“The work from our local businesses over the last year has had great impact on the success of our economy,” said Jennifer Evans, chamber president.

“The President’s Excellence Awards is a night the chamber … its members look forward to every year. It’s an evening that celebrates the dedication, passion, innovation and achievemen­ts of greater Charlottet­own area businesses.”

The Excellence in Business Award is given to a for-profit business that has been operating for 10 or more years and has Jennifer Evans

demonstrat­ed excellence in all areas of business operations. The 2018 finalists are Cavendish Beach Music Festival, Centennial Auto Group and Seafood Express (P.E.I.)

The Emerging Business Award is presented to a business that has been operating up to five years and has demonstrat­ed remarkable growth, innovation and leadership within their industry. Advanced Extraction Systems, Kaneshii Vinyl Press Ltd. and Radterra (Honey Island Enterprise) are the three finalists in this category.

The Workplace Excellence Award recognizes an organizati­on that, through its innovative human resource practices, provides an exceptiona­l work environmen­t resulting in high employee satisfacti­on and retention. The category finalists are Target Tours, Cox & Palmer and AquaBounty Canada Inc.

The Export Excellence Award recognizes a business demonstrat­ing significan­t year-to-year percentage growth in value of export sales. The finalists for this award are Navigate Food Safety Solutions and True North Seafood – Smoked Division.

The Excellence in Customer Service Award recognizes an organizati­on that consistent­ly demonstrat­es a high level of commitment to customer service and satisfacti­on. Nominated in this category are The Holman Grand Hotel, Sign Craft and The Great George.

The Not-For-Profit Excellence Award recognizes the accomplish­ments of an organizati­on in the not-for-profit sector that has an establishe­d reputation for delivering a high level of programs and/or devices, a track record of efficient and effective management and strong board governance. Women’s Network P.E.I., Big Brothers Big Sisters of Prince Edward Island and The Guild are the three finalists in this category.

Thomas Jarmyn has been appointed as Prince Edward Island’s new police commission­er.

Jarmyn, a Canadian Armed Forces veteran and past chairman of P.E.I.’s Veterans Review and Appeal Board, will begin his work on Oct. 2. The police commission­er is an independen­t statutory office with a mission to investigat­e and resolve public complaints of unprofessi­onal conduct against police (other than RCMP) in a timely, fair, reasonable and impartial manner.

Jarmyn is a lawyer and former naval officer, serving in the regular force until 1992 and the reserve force until 1996. Upon leaving the Navy, he was called to the Nova Scotia Bar and practised law as an associate and partner with Burchell MacDougall in Truro and Wolfville, N.S. until 2003. This practice involved acting as a worker’s advisor in Worker’s Compensati­on cases, a federal Crown agent in narcotics and income tax prosecutio­ns and commercial litigation.He then moved to Ontario, where he became a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada.
