The Ross Family is on the tail end of an active performance schedule as they prepare for their final performance of the season on Oct. 3.

The Ross Family Ceilidh is an annual concert series that debuted in 2006. It features a brother-sister group comprised of Danielle on fiddle and vocals, Stephanie on guitar and vocals — both of whom stepdance — and Johnny, who plays piano and serves as emcee.

It is modified each season and has evolved significantly from its early years.

Every Monday night since midJune, the group has been pumping out tunes to packed crowds from Clinton Hills.

“We dedicated many hours to revamping things for 2018 and it’s our most exciting show yet,” said Johnny.

In addition to new musical content, there’s an increased focus on comedy and refined showmanship – much to the approval of the audience.

“The crowd gasps in delight when the girls break into the Charleston during a stepdance routine,” said Johnny.

“And their jaws drop when Danielle demonstrates her prowess with a hula hoop. She’s been doing trick fiddling with it for years, but now she also stepdances while balancing the spinning hoop around her waist. It’s a hit.”

True to its name, the event is a family affair. Dorothy, mother of the band members, is a guest stepdancer, while their father, Allison, operates a video camera to help people sitting at the back catch the footwork on the big screen television.

The family’s venue, Clinton Hills, is a renovated dairy barn that dates back to the late 1950s.

“In honour of the former residents of this barn, we’re gonna play music ‘til the cows come. We might be here awhile. The cows haven’t been home in years,” joked Johnny.

Tickets are available at the door, online at www.clintonhills. ca or www.rossfamily.ca, or by phoning 902-886-3080. Telephone box office hours are Monday and Wednesday 12 to 4 p.m.
