Hurricanes blow chances in overtime

The decision to give the “C” to all-star defenceman Shea Weber was “unanimous.”

Weber, who underwent offseason knee surgery and isn’t expected back in the lineup until at least December, was named the 30th captain in team history at hits to pick up the win. Jordan Stevenson record the final six outs for the save.

MacLean pitched 15 shutout innings in the finals, picking up two wins, while Stevenson threw 19 innings and finished with two wins and a save.

Holland College went for the two-point conversion, which is the rule for both teams to do in the second overtime period after a major score. But with the ball the Bell Sports Complex on Monday afternoon, with Paul Byron and Brendan Gallagher named alternates.

Gallagher was a popular candidate among fans to become the next Canadiens captain, but management opted for the two-time Olympic gold medallist instead.

“It really is an honour,” Weber said. “I don’t know if you can put it into words. I don’t know how many times you can say it’s an honour. You look at the guys in our dressing room, guys who have worn this letter in this organizati­on’s history. It’s special.”

Nigel Fisher continued his hot bat in the final game, hitting a leadoff double in the third inning. Mitch Ryan reached on an error to put runners on first and second base, then Jed MacEwen’s sacrifice bunt led to a throwing error that loaded the bases with no outs.

After A’s starter Dan O’Shea on the one-yard line, the Hurricanes’ offence was penalized and moved back.

On the following play, Dal’s defence took a penalty, then on the ensuing play Crowe couldn’t reach the end zone against a tenacious Tiger defence.

The game was tied 10-10 at

General manager Marc Bergevin and head coach Claude Julien discussed Weber as captain following the trade of former leader Max Pacioretty to the Vegas Golden Knights.

It’s a change in style from 2015, when a players vote resulted in Pacioretty becoming captain.

“I think it’s pretty obvious when you look at (Weber) as a person,” Canadiens head coach Claude Julien said.

“Players gravitate to him. He’s very open to bringing players to his house for meals, young players that don’t have someone cooking struck out the next batter, Jayden MacLean hit a ground ball to short scoring Fisher as Stratford couldn’t turn the double-play to end the inning.

Bergevin added that he got the “feel” from the locker room as well and felt a vote was not necessary to decide a captain this time around.

“The choice was obvious,” Bergevin said.

“The players all feel the same way. We all feel the same way that Shea is the right guy to lead this team. We didn’t want to wait. Training camp is over, season starts on Wednesday. Today was the perfect day to make the announceme­nt.” It was a rough weekend for the UPEI Panthers men’s and women’s soccer teams as the squads went a combined 1-2-1 in Atlantic University Sports action.

The women (2-4-2) got the lone win in a 4-1 victory over Moncton on Friday.

Madison Hurley scored twice while Tyffanie Bordage and Jennifer Balderston added singles, then tied UNB 0-0 on Sunday.

Rebecca Duda (UNB) and Amanda Stanyer earned the shutouts.

On the men’s side, the offence continues to struggle as the Panthers (15-2) were shut out 2-0 by Moncton on Friday and thumped 5-1 by UNB on Sunday.

Mohammad Jaber netted the Panthers’ marker.
