‘Lions’ roar to victory

Internatio­nal tuna cup challenge comes to a close off eastern P.E.I.

The Team C Lions from Granby, Que., have claimed the 2018 Canada Internatio­nal Tuna Cup Challenge crown.

The Lions grabbed the title recently along with the Capt. Ernie MacPhee and mate Steve MacPhee of Ernie’s Charter Fishing on board the Lefthander.

Members of the winning team include Martin Nadeau, Mario Pelletier, Richard Naud and David Dupont, all of whom are from Granby.

The winning team caught and released three tuna in the shortened two-day event with sizes of 87, 96 and 95 inches, respective­ly. The third day had to be cancelled due to inclement weather.

The TTF Pirates from Marina Del Ray, Calif., and Kailua Kona, Hawaii, were the first runner up on board L’il Miss Maddy with Capt. Tony MacDonald and mate Cory Chaisson of Tony’s Tuna Fishing. The Pirates caught and released two tuna of 108 and 105 inches in length.

Team Huronia with Capt. Carl Gallant and mate Rob Doiron on board Just Crackin’ were the second runner up with two tuna of 97 and 99 inches in length, respective­ly. Huronia team members include Floyd Stewart, John Cavanagh, P.D. Murphy, Scott Seymour, Steve Cordery and John Murphy.

The roster of anglers came from a diverse area once again this year, including Australia, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Connecticu­t, Ohio, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and P.E.I.

It was also announced the dates for the 2019 event will be Wednesday, Sept. 18, through Saturday, Sept. 21.
