Nancy Beth Guptill enters race for Summerside mayor against Brent Gallant, Basil Stewart
The timing is right for Summerside resident Nancy Beth Guptill, the latest candidate in the race for Summerside mayor.
“It’s been about 20 years since we had a female mayor, and even now we’re looking at one female councilor,” said Guptill. “So, when I see these strong women coming out to run for council, this may be the first time we’ll be close to parity and equity of the female voice represented with new, fresh perspectives. So, the time to run is now.”
Guptill runs a business and digital consultancy firm and is the founder of Sweet Spot Academy and Connected Farmer.
She has lived most of her life in Summerside, leaving only to attend post-secondary school and living in Ontario to start the early years of her career.
“I chose to come back to Summerside. And I want to work with the community, residents, stakeholders and others, so that when people think about moving to P.E.I., Summerside is the first choice.”
Guptill says if she were to be elected her approach would be more collaborative, calling on the opinions of residents and community leaders in Summerside.
“It’s essential that municipal government collaborates with the community, residents and stakeholders,” she said. “We need to hear the desire of what communities want.”
She would also like to see a more inclusive city, with the various growing segments within Summerside becoming more engaged. She says she’s excited to enter the race and is encouraged that people are looking for new directions to forward the city.
“People are looking for change and they’re looking into the future. That’s what this election is about: looking in to the future of Summerside, not our past. I believe I bring that new, fresh perspective.” Basil Stewart and Brent Gallant are also vying for the position.
