Longtime Summerside police officer and business owner Joe Peters is running to represent Summerside’s Ward 6, Center East-Downtown.

Peters served with Summerside Police Services for 37 years before retiring in 2016.

Peters said he hopes to serve the city again in a new capacity.

He and his wife Carol are also business owners. They operate Sheens for Shoes on Water Street, which is one of Summerside’s oldest retail businesses.

If elected, Peters said he would be a strong voice for small business at the council table and would work hard to help economic development in the city.

Other areas in which he would like to focus include reducing electrical and tax rates in the city, providing more accessible recreation programs for people of all ages, a closer working relationship between council and Summerside police and creating a more open and transparent council.

“Where public tax funds are concerned there should be no secrets,” said Peters. “Residents have the right to know how their hard-earned dollars are being spent. I will work to create a more open and transparent city council. I believe we should live, breath and enjoy transparency. I believe that it is clear that greater public engagement will make a strong impact in our city’s future direction.”

Ward 6 is currently held by long-time councillor Norma McColeman, who is reoffering. To date, Glenna Lohnes is the only other challenger to come forward.
