Seven new members have been appointed to the board of Health P.E.I.

The new members were officially appointed on Tuesday night at an annual general meeting of Health P.E.I. They include outgoing interim trustee and board chairman Jim Revell, along with Helen Flynn, Colleen Parker, Philip Jost, Kathleen McMillan, Randy Goodman and Andrea Slysz.

A total of 10 individuals were also appointed to two community health engagement committees. Helen Flynn and Merrill Scott were both re-appointed to the committee for the eastern region, while Sandra MacFadyen and Patricia Charlton were newly appointed. Whytney Harris was reappointed to the committee for the western region, while Colleen Parker, Blake Adams, Michelle Gaudet, Lynn Anne Hogan and Brenda McAlduff were newly appointed.

“Our new board and committee members have an impressive range of experiences, including frontline health care, health policy and research and both private and non-profit sector experience,” said Health Minister Robert Mitchell in a statement.

Health P.E.I. has operated without a full board since every member of the previous board resigned in May in protest of amendments to the province’s Health Services Act tabled in the spring. Revell, who had served alongside members of the previous board before retiring last March, returned to serve as the sole interim trustee in June.

“We have a number of initiatives that need to be continued and completed, not least of which is the selection of a new Health P.E.I. CEO. My tenure will be as long as I can ensure good service.” Jim Revell

Revell will now serve as chairman of the new board and will function as a key source of institutional memory for the new board.

“We have a number of initiatives that need to be continued and completed, not least of which is the selection of a new Health P.E.I. CEO,” Revell said.

“My tenure will be as long as I can ensure good service.”

Flynn was also re-appointed as the chairwoman of the community health engagement committee for the eastern region, while Parker was appointed chairwoman of the same committee for the western region.

Flynn’s resume in the healthcare field is lengthy. She is a retired nurse who has worked in corrections, addictions and corporate services. She said she was offered the position on the board partly because of her work on the community health engagement committee.

“I’ve been involved with health most of my life,” Flynn said.

“I still have a keen interest in health and health outcomes in particular.”

Flynn said her recent work on the community health engagement committee has involved advising various decision-makers on issues such as the Island’s seniors strategy and the recent legalization of cannabis.

The new board will undergo an extensive training process, involving a three- to four-month orientation process.

Revell said he has been pleased by the support he has received during his tenure as interim trustee, particularly from his wife.

“I am truly humbled by the well wishers, to me, in this role,” Revell said.
