Alan Munro says he’ll represent Ward 2 residents first and foremost

- BY MITCH MACDONALD

While he’s yet to officially become elected, Alan Munro is already starting his responsibilities as a Three Rivers councillor.

Munro is the only candidate who was acclaimed in the Three Rivers election and will represent Ward 2.

While Munro is not officially part of the interim council, he attended Monday’s committee of council meeting as an audience member.

“I’m going to these meetings and I’m listening,” said Munro, who began campaigning immediately after amalgamation was announced. “I came out early and I was banging on doors right from the get-go.”

Munro said his motivation to run was to provide a strong voice for his ward, which consists of the large rural area surrounding Valleyfield, Heatherdale, Brooklyn and Commercial Cross.

“I’ll look out for Three Rivers. But as a resident of Ward 2, I will be looking out for Ward 2 first. That’s why I got out early and met with people to hear their issues.”

Munro said one major issue is the restoration of services at Kings County Memorial Hospital. He said this may not be a return to 24-hour service but could hopefully go back to a 10 p.m. closure on most nights.

Munro said another issue is, because his ward will not have town-serviced septic, sewer or streetlights, is to make sure his constituents are receiving their fair share.

“And getting what they deserve,” he said.

Munro lives on Whim Road with his wife and two daughters. He has worked for the provincial transportation department for 20 years and is currently the depot manager of the government garage in Bridgetown.

Candidates do not have to live in a ward in order to run as a councillor, although they do have to be a Three Rivers resident.

Munro noted there are three candidates living in Ward 2 running for other council seats and one resident running for mayor.

“I was a little surprised somebody didn’t step up and run against me. Everybody likes a good race, it makes for a good council. But I will be a strong voice,” said Munro.
