Panthers drop pair

UPEI loses 3-1 at UNB, shut out 3-0 by Saint Mary’s

Hannah Green scored the winner three minutes into the third period Sunday as the UNB Varsity Reds defeated the UPEI Panthers 3-1 in Atlantic University Sport women’s hockey action.

It was the second loss of the weekend for UPEI after dropping a 3-0 decision to the Saint Mary’s Huskies Saturday on home ice. Hanna Matchett gave the host Reds the lead 2:40 into the second period and Kelly Clements tied it at the four-minute mark. Jolena Gillard and Rachel Colle had the helpers.

Tamina Kehler rounded out the scoring with an empty-net marker.

Julia Spitzig, Kehler, Paige Grenier and Jenna MacLean had assists for the Reds.

Hailey Martens made 26 saves for the win while Camille Scherger stopped 30 shots in the loss.

UNB improved to 2-1-3 while UPEI is 3-3-0.

Gillard has a conference­leading eight points in six games while fellow rookie Clements and veteran Colle each have five points in six games.

Siobhan Birch scored two power-play goals and Rebecca Clark had a 23-save shutout to lead the Huskies to victory on Saturday.

Caitlin Pejkovic rounded out the scoring with 48 seconds left in the contest at MacLauchla­n Arena. Miranda Hatt, Kiana Wilkinson, Kaitlin Howarth, Taylor Keeping and Shae Demale each had an assist.

Saint Mary’s led 1-0 after the first and second periods.

Scherger made 19 saves in the loss.

Saint Mary’s was 2-for-2 on the power play while UPEI was 0-for-4.
