Muirhead leads Caps to win

Charlottet­own native has recorded 10 points in last three games

Kallum Muirhead continued his torrid scoring pace for the Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals on Saturday night.

The Charlottet­own native netted a hat trick to lead the Capitals to a 5-2 win over the Grand Falls Rapids in Maritime Junior Hockey League action before 1,178 fans at Eastlink Arena.

Muirhead, who has recorded 10 points in his last three games, extended his point streak to five games.

Muirhead moved into third place in the league scoring race with 27 points – 16 goals and 11 assists – in 15 regular-season contests.

Brodie MacArthur (1-1) and Conor MacEachern also scored for the Capitals, who improved their Eastlink North Divisionle­ading record to 12-3-0.

Sam Meisenheim­er (3), T.J. Shea (2), Cam Roberts and Calum MacPherson added assists.

Jean-Simon Belanger (1-1) and Ronan Rheaume replied for the Rapids (4-7-1).

The Rapids led 1-0 after the first period, but four unanswered goals in the middle frame sent the Caps into the second intermissi­on ahead 4-1.

The Caps outshot the Rapids 43-33 with Daniel Thompson earning the win over Andrew Rose.

The Caps had four affiliated players in Saturday’s lineup – forwards Riley MacDougall of the Mount Academy Saints in Charlottet­own and Charlottet­own Bulk Carriers Pride captain Nick Reeves as well as Pride defencemen Hunter Bradley and Ed McNeill.

The Caps’ next game is Thursday in New Glasgow, N.S., against the Pictou County Weeks Crushers.
