Hurricanes off to strong start

Holland College women sweep opening matches in ACCA conference play

The Holland Hurricanes kicked off their season with a pair of straight-set victories in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n (ACAA) women’s volleyball play over the weekend.

Saturday, the ‘Canes defeated the Dal AC Rams on the road, before winning their home opener against the Mount Allison Mounties at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement on Sunday.

Against the Rams, the Hurricanes won by set scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-21.

Brittany States and Abby Hyndman both had six kills to lead the way for the ‘Canes, with Taylor Allen recording four.

Both Lauren Moerike and Zayley Murphy had three while Laura Ready had a game-high 13 assists and six aces in the win.

The Hurricanes had a total of eight players record at least one dig in the match, led by States with four.

The Rams were led by Jillian Ferguson (six kills), Sam Nichols (seven assists) and Laura Smith and Xenna Mazal (each with four digs). Dal AC dropped to 0-1.

In front of a jam-packed Holland College Centre for Community Engagement, the ‘Canes defeated the Mounties 25-17, 2519, 25-22.

Brittany States and Abby Hyndman once again led the offence by picking up eight and seven kills, respective­ly, while Allen and Murphy chipped in with three each.

Ready had a game-high 20 assists.

The Hurricanes recorded 16 service aces on the day, led by Hyndman with five and Murphy with four. Katie Wood had 14 digs, with Allen and Murphy both earning 11.

The Mounties fell to 1-1. Top performers for Mount Allison on Sunday were Rachel MacDougall and Rachel Van Gestel (each with five kills and eight digs) and Sophie Landry (14 assists).

The Hurricanes’ next action is Saturday, Nov. 3, when they travel to Halifax, N.S., to take on the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics at 2 p.m. Holland College then plays the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons on Sunday in Church Point, N.S., at 10 a.m.
