Charlottetown’s Alysha Corrigan selected for national touring squad

Alysha Corrigan’s November keeps getting better after the Charlottetown native was named to Canada’s senior women’s national rugby touring team on Thursday.

The former UPEI Panthers standout is part of the 31-player roster set to travel to the United Kingdom to play teams there later this month as the Canadian team looks to develop for the World Cup in 2021.

Corrigan, who earlier this week was also named a U Sports second team all-Canadian for the third time, is playing with the Acadia Axewomen which host the national university women’s rugby championship this weekend in Wolfville, N.S.

Acadia lost a gruelling 26-24 match against the Ottawa Gee Gees on Thursday after Ottawa tied the game with less than a minute left, kicked the convert and propelled itself into Friday’s semifinal.

The Axewomen tangle with the Victoria Vikes today at 1 p.m.

Corrigan finished second finished second in Atlantic University Sport scoring with 53 points, one point behind teammate and Tignish native Tori Hogan (54 points), and helped the Charlottetown Rugby Football Club win its second straight Rugby Nova Scotia Tier 1 women’s title.

Corrigan and her Team Canada crew face England on Sunday, Nov. 18, and England’s A team on Wednesday, Nov. 21, move on to a tussle with Wales on Saturday, Nov. 24, then finish with Scotland on Tuesday, Nov. 27.
