Charlottetown schools capture intermediate AA titles
Stonepark, Queen Charlotte win gold-medal matches
The P.E.I. School Athletic Association intermediate AA volleyball championship banners will take up residence in Charlottetown.
The Stonepark Tigers and Queen Charlotte Coyotes won their respective gold-medal matches at Summerside Intermediate School on Saturday.
The Stonepark girls, who have won five provincial championships in a row, defeated the Kensington Torchettes in a hardfought four-set match. Scores were 25-21, 18-25, 25-20, 25-29.
The Tigers’ Sydney Lawlor was named the provincial championship’s most valuable player (MVP).
The Coyotes recorded a 3-1 victory over the Summerside Intermediate School Owls in the boys’ final. The Owls won the first set 25-22, but the Coyotes roared back to win the next three sets – 25-20, 25-23, 25-23.
Nick Harris of the Coyotes was named tournament MVP.
It was Queen Charlotte’s first boys’ provincial title since 1998.
In the bronze-medal matches, the Summerside Intermediate girls defeated Queen Charlotte 3-1 (25-15, 19-25, 25-13, 25-13) while East Wiltshire topped Birchwood 3-1 (25-17, 25-14, 16-25, 25-18) in the boys’ third-place match.
Semifinals
In the girls’ semifinals Friday, Kensington, sparked by consistent and accurate serving, defeated Queen Charlotte 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-4). Defending-champion Stonepark got by Summerside Intermediate 3-1 (25-15, 25-19, 24-26, 25-14) in a very evenly-matched competitive game.
In the boys’ semifinals, the Owls posed a 3-0 victory over the East Wiltshire Warriors in a match that was much closer than the final outcome may indicate. Scores were 25-23, 2520, 25-18.
The other matchup featured an all-Charlottetown clash between Queen Charlotte and Birchwood. Queen Charlotte dominated at the net en route to winning three straight sets – 25-20, 25-15, 25-19.
