MACDONALD, Joyce (Gay)

-

At age 90 passed away peacefully after a long battle with diabetes at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro on November 15, 2018. Joyce was predeceased by her parents Vernon and Mary (MacNeill) Gay, brother Vernie (Lorraine) Gay and sister Marion (Art) Farquharson. Joyce grew up in Charlottetown and after graduating from nursing school, left the island for Toronto, where she began her career in nursing. In 1950, Joyce joined T.C.A. (now Air Canada) as a stewardess and flew for two years between Toronto, Montreal, New York, Boston and Chicago. She met many famous people on these flights, her favorite being Eleanor Roosevelt. When she married, Joyce returned to nursing and had a rewarding career in Toronto, Winnipeg, (where she received her post graduate in Psychiatry at the University of Manitoba) and finally Montreal. Retiring in 1988, Joyce and Norbert travelled extensively, living in PEI during the summer and Florida in the winter. Joyce was very active in sports, playing basketball at Prince of Wales College in PEI, tennis, sailing, and cross-country skiing throughout her life. She was past president of the Maple Wings (Montreal chapter), was an avid gardener and traveler. Joyce loved animals and was a voracious reader. She will be deeply missed by her beloved husband of 66 years, Mac (Norbert), son Robert (Joan) Macdonald, daughter Maureen (Stewart) MacIntosh, brother Gordon (Bus) Gay, and many nieces and nephews. Very special thanks to the staff at the Colchester East Hants, especially the Palliative Care team for their kindness and exceptional care. For those wishing, donations can be made to the PEI Humane Society.
