Maritime Conference of Developmental Disability and Autism set for Charlottetown

-

The second annual Maritime Conference on Developmental Disability and Autism will be held in Charlottetown in late November.

Presentations and networking for professionals who work to support and include people with developmental disabilities and autism will highlight the event, which runs Nov. 29 and 30 at the Delta Prince Edward.

Keynote speakers include Dr. Karen Harvey of Baltimore who has published two books on therapeutic interventions for individuals with intellectual development disorder; Dr. Brenda Smith Myles, professor of special education at the University of Kansas; and Kevin Penny of Halifax, who suffered a spinal cord injury at age 15 which resulted in paralysis from the chest down but went on to impressive academic and athletic achievements.

Professionals from across Canada will offer sessions on management, social enterprise, ADHD, human rights, educational software, stress management, sexual education, and employment and housing options for disabled persons.

“All of the presenters bring exceptional knowledge, experience and insight into how we can best support and include people living with intellectual disabilities,’’ said Nancy Anderson, executive director of Inclusions East Inc., which is cohosting the event.
