Corrigan scores international try

It proved a successful romp through the United Kingdom for the Canadian senior women’s rugby touring team, with Charlottetown’s Alysha Corrigan, as the squad finished with a 3-1 record. Canada lost the opener to England 27-19, then tallied a 35-14 win over England’s A squad (in which Corrigan scored her first try in international play), earned a 38-21 victory over Wales before squeaking by Scotland 28-25 to close out the tour. Corrigan, a former UPEI Panthers and Acadia Axewomen standout, wasn’t on the roster versus England or Wales. With Acadia this season, she was named a second team allCanadian for the third time in her university career.

Ellsworth, Payne receive Panthers weekly awards

Jenna Mae Ellsworth and Cody Payne are the UPEI Panther Subway athletes of the week. Ellsworth is a third-year science student from Charlottetown and a guard on the UPEI women’s basketball team. The Panthers downed UNB 76–64 Saturday with Ellsworth having 28 points, three rebounds, and two assists.

“Jenna Mae had a strong effort to help the team close first semester on a high note,” said coach Matt Gamblin. “She not only scored the ball, but also made great decisions and forced turnovers with her defence as well.”

Payne is a third-year business student from Davie, Fla., and a forward on the UPEI men’s hockey team. The Panthers defeated Acadia 4-1 and Saint Mary’s 4-3 with Payne scoring a pair of goals in each game.

“Cody started to focus on the little things in practice and in games which got him more involved and in better scoring positions,” said coach Forbes MacPherson. “His natural ability took over after that.”
