Walker, Rivera return as Jays name staff

TORONTO – New Toronto Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo named his coaching staff on Tuesday for the 2019 Toronto Blue Jays season. Montoyo brought back pitching coach Pete Walker and third base coach Luis Rivera, who have spent a total of 16 seasons in Toronto.

The Blue Jays also promoted from within the organizati­on, naming Guillermo Martinez as hitting coach and John Schneider as major league coach.

Joining bench coach Dave Hudgens, the club hired Mark Budzinski as first base coach, Matt Buschmann as bullpen coach, and Shelley Duncan as Major League field coordinato­r.

Montoyo was hired by Toronto as John Gibbbons’s replacemen­t on Oct. 25. Fournette’s one-game suspension upheld JACKSONVIL­LE, Fla. – Jacksonvil­le Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette’s appeal of a one-game suspension for fighting has been denied, meaning he will sit out Sunday’s game against Indianapol­is.

Fournette was suspended without pay for leaving the sideline, running across the field and punching Buffalo Bills defensive end Shaq Lawson. Fournette appealed, but retired NFL receiver James Thrash affirmed the one-game punishment that will cost Fournette close to $100,000. The NFL and NFL Players’ Associatio­n appointed Thrash to decide appeals of on-field player discipline.

NFL vice-president of football operations Jon Runyan handed down the penalty Monday, saying “sportsmans­hip is the cornerston­e of the game and the league will not tolerate game-related misconduct that conveys a lack of respect for the game itself and those involved in it.” Athletics find location for new ballpark OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland Athletics have found a location for their modern new ballpark, announcing plans to build near Jack London Square along the water. Team president Dave Kaval had hoped to finalize a site by the end of the year, and the A’s made the announceme­nt Wednesday they had settled on the Howard Terminal site. The team’s new downtown offices will have a view of the project, including right from Kaval’s large corner window.
