Men win twice, women lose twice in ACAA road contests

The Holland College Hurricanes’ basketball teams jad mixed weekend results in Halifax, N.S.

The men swept its games against the King’s College Blue Devils and the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics, and the women lost both its contests against the same schools.

Sunday, the men downed Mount Saint Vincent 112-89 after a 109-77 victory against King’s College on Saturday. The women lost a 98-69 decision to the Mystics on Sunday following a 69-58 defeat to King’s on Saturday.

The men (8-0) head into the holiday break leading the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n (ACAA) standings. The women (3-5) are tied with the UNBSJ Seawolves for fifth.

Both teams resume regularsea­son play Saturday, Jan. 12, at UNBSJ.

Men Sunday Hurricanes 112, Mystics 89

The Hurricanes took on the ACAA’s second-place team and came away with the win, much thanks to Jace Colley’s 28-point, nine-rebound effort.

Connor Therrien added 22 points while Martin Campbell recorded 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Roosevelt Whyley (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Jordan Holness (13 points, eight rebounds) also recorded double-digit scoring games.

Colley is tied with Crandall’s Kendal Brown for the conference lead in points per game with 26.8.

Saturday Hurricanes 109, Blue Devils 77

The Hurricanes jumped out to a 56-40 lead at the half and never looked back.

Colley’s 28 points led the attack, with Whyley and Campbell recording 21 and 20 points, respective­ly. Whyley, who leads the ACAA in rebounds at 11.6 per game, also nabbed 14 rebounds.

Holness chipped in 13 points and Antonio Kostakos added 11 points and six rebounds off the bench.

Women Sunday Mystics 98, Hurricanes 69

Holland College started strong against the third-ranked team in the nation, running out to 49-46 halftime lead, but couldn’t hold the edge in the second half.

Jayla Verney led the Hurricanes’ offence with 15 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists.

Ashley Plaggenhoe­f and Lexi MacInnis scored with 13 and 12 points, respective­ly, while Tyleigha Nelson, who leads the ACAA with 9.5 rebounds per game, finished with eight points and 10 boards.

Saturday Blue Devils 69, Hurricanes 58

Holland College fell behind early and couldn’t recover in the loss to King’s. The Hurricanes trailed 15-9 after the first quarter, 26-22 at the half, and 48-40 after three in a close matchup.

MacInnis and Plaggenhoe­f each drained 14 points while Nelson chipped in 10 points and six assists. Verney grabbed a teamhigh 10 rebounds.
